Jean Paul Gaultier SPRING/SUMMER 2014 HAUTE COUTURE
“Life is a butterfly! So all the collection is that!” explained Jean Paul Gaultier, A GAULTIER collection really is at home on the couture catwalk and today, as news broke that his world-touring retrospective exhibition would open in the Grand Palais in April, the designer was in buoyant mood as ever. With Sophia Loren on the front row and Dita von Teese on the catwalk, it was theatrical, ambitious and had all the signature joie de vivre.
Beginning with black tailored trousers and curvy skirts worn with billowing jewel-coloured chiffon blouses featuring huge voluminous sleeves, the show took the butterfly as a focus – they fluttered over headpieces and clustered over jewelled mesh dresses in coral and red, before the veins of their wings formed black netting over column dresses of shimmering emerald and ruby.
The headdresses grew to epic, feathered antennae proportions, before Gaultier’s favourite black leather biker jacket appeared as a gown with white tulle mermaid hemline and a nude sheath dress followed it strung with a treasure trove of pearls, before the bride appeared, her headdress almost worthy of scaffolding all its own. Paris high fashion at its most entertaining.
